Scott Preheim
Scott
is the technical director of the Beickman Performing Arts Center at Concord
High School in Dunlap, IN. He went to college for a degree in stage management
and he’s been working at Concord High School for at least 20 years. On top of
management and director, he is experienced with sound setup, stage lighting and
set construction for the yearly “Fall Play” and “Spring Musical”. During the
school year, he runs the Beickman Performing Arts Center (BPAC) Club for
students that have an interest in stage work. He helps the students learn how
to operate sound or lighting boards, work with rigging speakers and light
fixtures and build or set up musical events for the Concord District. Scott
also helps set up the well-known “Jazz Café” event that takes place in the main
high school gymnasium every year.
1) How
or when did you form an interest in stage management?
2) What
have you learned in addition to being a stage director in general?
3) Have
you influenced many students to take a degree in stage work for a career after
they graduate?
4) Has
the theatre or stage industry changed a lot since you started working as a
director? If so how or why?
5) What
do you like the most about your job?
6) Is
there any subject in college that you wished you would have taken that might
have prepared you more?
7) Did
you do any similar type of work before starting at Concord?
8) Is
this a rewarding field to get into?
9) Does
this job require a lot of outside work before or after hours?
10) Have you enjoyed working with other people to
make successful productions?
Good. Again think about questions that can draw out emotion. How do the students inspire you? What do you hope students learn from participating in the arts? How do you feel when you've completed a successful production?
